Zero-Click Search

A search session that ends without any click to a website because the SERP or AI answer satisfied the query directly.

A zero-click search is a search session where the user’s query is answered directly on the results page — by a featured snippet, a knowledge panel, an AI Overview, or a rich result — so the user gets what they need without clicking through to any website. The session ends with a satisfied intent and zero organic traffic delivered to any publisher.

Zero-click rates have risen as Google has added more direct-answer features. Data from SparkToro and others consistently shows that roughly half of all Google searches result in no click. For informational queries — definitions, calculations, quick facts — zero-click rates run higher.

The standard SEO response to zero-click is two-fold. First, stop chasing high-volume informational queries where zero-click is certain and the brand benefit of appearing is nil. Second, compete deliberately for the zero-click position itself on queries where brand visibility in the snippet or AI Overview has direct commercial value — so the impression drives brand consideration even without a click.

For commercial and transactional queries, zero-click rates are lower: users searching for a service or comparing vendors typically need more than a snippet provides. These queries remain high-value organic targets. The strategic adjustment is weighting content investment toward commercial-intent pages and using informational content as a brand visibility channel rather than a traffic channel.

Example

Example

A search for "what is a blended CAC" triggers a featured snippet that fully answers the question. The publisher whose content powers the snippet gets brand visibility without a click. For that brand, zero-click is not a loss — it is a brand impression in front of an audience researching CAC.

Frequently asked questions

Are all zero-click searches bad for publishers?

Not all. On informational queries, a featured snippet or AI Overview mention creates brand impression and authority, even without a click. The calculus changes for commercial queries, where no click means no lead — concentrate organic investment there.

Will zero-click rates keep rising?

Likely yes for informational queries as AI Overviews expand. The implication for content strategy is to treat informational content as brand positioning rather than traffic generation, and to prioritize BOFU, high-intent pages that require evaluation before the user is satisfied.
